  • Witrand Specialized Hospital is a Psychiatric unit serves as the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District referral unit for acute and sub-acute psychiatry after admission through 72-hour units. It also serves currently as a referral unit for substance rehabilitation for DSD for the North West Province. Long-term psychiatric inpatients and forensic services are the core function of Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital.

comprehensive hospital-based Mental Health and Rehabilitation Services to the Community of the North West Province.

  • Intellectual disabled = 644 beds
  • Psychiatry = 138 beds
  • (65 Psychotic disorder beds; 57 mood and drug addiction treatment beds and 16 child adolescent beds) joint venture with Social Development
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation Unit with 15 beds (for Spinal & Head injury patients, including stroke and hypertension.
  • NB!!! We also had COVID-19 Ward with 60 beds (re-purposed from the Psychiatric beds).

  • 60 COVID-19 dedicated beds allocated to Ward 2C and G (not included in 797 usable beds)

Medical Care & Treatment

Our medical officers work hand in hand with our specialists and other members of the healthcare team (Multidisciplinary) to ensure your medical care is carefully coordinated and expertly delivered.

The Multidisciplinary team will also provide the treatment prescribed for you, monitor your condition, and make sure you are kept as comfortable as possible during your stay with us.

Treatment Plan

Our patients’ treatment and medication are provided as prescribed by the doctors, if patients feel any pain or discomfort between doses of
medication, in this case, our nursing practitioner picks it up and immediately orders the doctor to be contacted and prescribes the alternative form of treatment.

Nursing Units & Staff: Ensure Professional Care

Our nursing team is dedicated to making sure that patients receive personal attentive care. Each nursing unit is occupied by various categories of personnel, who are easily identifiable by their name badges.

The Deputy Director of Nursing is the head of the nursing team in the hospital is responsible for delegating the management of various nursing duties to the immediate Assistant Director for Nursing in charge of serval Units and to the
Operational managers in the Units.

Operational Managers/ Unit Managers

Responsible for dealing with special requests or concerns made by patients/parents /Doctors/ and other Clinical Support, if unavailable shift leader will always be there to offer assistance. Unit staff is also visible when a patient /parent/ Guardian /community member seeks to speak to senior management.

Nursing Professionals

Are mainly responsible for dealing with any queries, concerns, and or suggestions regarding the medical care of patients.

Staff & Auxiliary Nurses

All staff and auxiliary nurses work under the supervision of a nursing professional and are always happy to assist patients in any way they can.

Care Workers

Assist the nursing team with patient care and perform non-nursing duties.

Unit Administrative Assistants

Assist the operational Managers and their staff by taking care of administrative functions and duties.

Catering

The catering staff is responsible for the serving of meals and drinks. A dietician is always available should patients require nutritional advice.

Housekeeping & Maintenance

Our housekeeping staff is responsible for the cleanliness of the unit and wards.

Clinical Support / Professional Services

The hospital has a pool of Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Social Workers, Speech & audiologists, and biokinetics, Psychologists who provide their services in a more specialized capacity, at the request of medical officers or specialists both in an Inpatient and outpatient services continuum.
