What is this unit/Dept about?

Caring for intellectually disabled male patients presenting with behavioural problems. Ages range from 11 years to 60 Years some of the patients due to not able to cope in the community due to behavioural problems admitted. Some have attended normal schooling till at lower grades.

What are its specialised services (what does the unit offer)?

Stimulation to high-functioning patients in the simulation room. 6 patients are attending occupational therapy for stimulation (upholstery and wheelchairs repairing)

How does one get access to the unit (through grooming or straight)?

Straight

Unit is situated next to the recreational hall.

Could you please explain the steps followed to access the services?

Difficult patients from other wards are admitted to ward 11. Other patients from the community are assessed in a psychiatric unit. When found after assessment through the Fairview help scale to be found mentally disabled then they are admitted in ward 11.

What type of diagnosis do you admit at your unit?

  • Epilepsy
  • Mentally disabled patients with behavioural problems

  • Patients who can’t undergo normal schooling

Are there any competent skilled nurses or doctors working specially for the unit?

  • Ward Doctor (Daily patient ward rounds)
  • Operational manager (Qualifications B A Nursing majoring in Nursing Education, Nursing Management, Diploma in psychiatric nursing, Diploma in Community Health Nursing.
  • Professional Nurses (D 4 courses)
  • Enrolled nurses
  • Nursing assistants
  • Multi-professional team meeting once a month to assess and evaluate patients (Ward Doctor, professional nurses, psychologist, Social Worker, Dietician, Physiotherapist )
